Common questions

How much does Etsy actually take from each sale?
More than most sellers realise until they check. Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on your item price plus whatever shipping you charge the buyer, a $0.20 listing fee, and a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 per order. On a $40 sale with $8 shipping, that's roughly $5.40 in fees before you've counted what the item cost you to make.
Does Etsy charge fees on my shipping price?
Yes, and this catches a lot of sellers off guard. Both the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% + $0.25 processing fee apply to the shipping amount you charge the buyer — not just the item price. Your actual postage cost (the label you buy) is separate and comes out of your pocket directly.
What is Etsy Offsite Ads and do I have to pay for it?
Offsite Ads is Etsy's program where they advertise your listings on Google, Facebook, and other platforms. If someone clicks one of those ads and buys from you within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the sale (or 12% if your shop has made over $10K in the past year). Under $10K in annual sales it's optional. Over $10K it's mandatory — you can't opt out.
